Food and Drink
The back row of tables out on the terrace and overlooking the beach are the privacy-affording seating of choice for Bollywood’s finest. Kishore Kumar fans can pay homage at a seat next to his mural. So it wouldn’t be right to say that there’s anything especially shocking or revolutionary about it. But the point is that it feels fresh and sensible and consonant with its surroundings. It works extremely, unexpectedly, quite delightfully well here in Mumbai. Those familiar with the brand will be surprised to the point of stupefaction by the size of the rooms here (actually perfectly decent) and delighted by the way the familiar Soho House look has been ramped up with the clever use of local fabrics and accessories.

Shoppers in search of wearable Indian artistry should head to Bandra, Lower Parel and the downtown districts of Kala Ghoda and Colaba. Mumbai’s oldest museum (it opened in 1857), Bhau Daji Lad, is Palladian on the outside and Victorian on the inside. Or hop on the roll on, roll off ferry to the seaside town of Alibaug to admire the restaurants, boutiques and real estate.
The Club is set across two floors, with a rooftop pool (it wouldn’t be Soho House without one) for views of the Arabian Sea and beyond. This membership covers one room a stay for the member and any additional rooms booked for their children under 18. The company has rapidly expanded since then, building up clubhouses and opening its doors to many people (and sometimes too many of them, current members complain).
The Soho House in Mumbai is a 11-floor building, located in Juhu and it overlooks the Arabian Sea. This “club” houses everything you could dream of - be it a library, a movie theatre, a gym, a pool and a lot more. He’s testing new mobile-ordering technology, which should enable Soho House members lounging by, say, a rooftop pool to order food and drinks through an app; and he claims that Soho House has increased wages and benefits and training for its staff. It’s a tricky balance for an unprofitable company that needs to rein in expenses, but Carnie hopes the investment in his people will ultimately address both the financial and reputational critiques of Soho House today.

Yet despite its hefty price tag, Soho House has lost money every year since its doors opened in 1995. That might be forgivable under some circumstances—you have to spend money to make money, after all—as long as the losses happen behind the scenes, affecting only the bank accounts of deep-pocketed billionaires or other wealthy, private investors.
But only for those from the creative scene — think artists, musicians, writers, actors, and so on. And now, 22 houses (across UK, Europe and North America) later, it’s no different. So, you won’t see any power suits in the hallways. Instead, you’ve got a deliberately casual dress code that’s perfectly suited to Mumbai’s year-round climate.
